Yes: a multivitamin counts when your laboratory asks about biotin. Biotin is vitamin B7, and some blood-testing methods can give misleading results when there is extra biotin in the sample. Micrograms are commonly written as mcg or µg. Both mean the same thing. Milligrams, written mg, are different: 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg.

Can 150 or 300 mcg of biotin affect a thyroid blood test?
There is no universal yes-or-no answer for every laboratory. Two pieces of evidence explain why.
The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment's May 2026 biotin guidance flags potential interference at supplemental intakes of 150 mcg a day or more and recommends disclosure before testing. That does not mean every result at 150 mcg is distorted, or that a smaller amount is guaranteed irrelevant.
Meanwhile, a 2023 prospective study of 57 people treated for hypothyroidism examined supplements containing less than 300 mcg daily. Researchers found changes in thyroid measurements after withdrawal, but considered the clinical impact small in most participants. This was a limited patient group, not proof that every assay—or an exact 300 mcg dose—is unaffected.
The practical conclusion is proportional: disclose the dose; do not assume the result is wrong. The clinician and laboratory can judge whether the method used is susceptible and whether anything needs repeating.
How biotin interference differs from a thyroid problem
Some tests use biotin as part of the laboratory's measurement process. Biotin already present in the blood sample can disrupt that process. A result can therefore look different without representing the same change inside the body.
For certain affected thyroid assays, the pattern can include a falsely low thyroid-stimulating hormone result and falsely high thyroid-hormone results. Other tests can behave differently. The AACC laboratory guidance emphasises that susceptibility varies between tests and manufacturers.

Ask the laboratory or clinician who ordered the test; there is no single waiting period that fits every supplement and assay. The American Thyroid Association has published advice to stop biotin for at least two days before thyroid testing. That is thyroid-specific guidance, not a universal rule for all blood tests or high-dose treatment.
Your team may give different instructions based on the test, daily dose and medical circumstances. Kidney disease is relevant because biotin clearance can be affected; mention it when asking. Do not stop medically prescribed biotin—or any other prescribed medicine—without the prescriber's advice.
